Caught up in the chaos of the academic year, it can be easy to forget about the world around you. Between lectures, labs, tutorials, midterms, essays, and other assignments, there simply does not seem to be enough time in the day to think of much else.
Before you know it, exam season rolls around and it is truly a time of reflection as you look back on the past semester that was. On the long walks back from the Exam Centre, I often find myself admiring the beauty of the University of Toronto’s St. George campus, from the Norman and Romanesque Revival architecture of University College to the blooming cherry blossoms outside Robarts Library. The campus has not changed, but rather, my eyes have been opened to the world around me.
Similarly, we often go about our day-to-day lives living in a utopian bubble. From clean running water to access to an education and quality medical care, we often take for granted such luxuries that are foreign to millions of people around the world. We must open our eyes to the world around us and recognize how fortunate we are, as well as what incredible potential we have to create positive change in communities around the world.
Changing the world sounds like an extremely daunting task, especially for one individual. However, you are never alone in your efforts to create a better tomorrow. This is (*drumroll please*) the power of WE. You alone can make a difference, but when WE come together in support of a common cause, our potential for positive good only grows and grows and grows.
WE Charity understands this. Their WE Villages international development program works directly with community members halfway around the world to empower them with a ‘hand-up, not a hand-out’. It helps foster positive change in the spirit of friendship and empathy that is sustainable for generations to come.
We are proud to be working with WE Villages to support healthcare projects in Kenya that both educate community members to prevent disease and ensure that quality health services are available to them. Our desire to help comes from an understanding that not all populations around the world are nearly as fortunate as us, and recognizing our potential to make a difference.
We are working together to create positive change, and invite you to join us. Be sure to connect with us on social media as we prepare for the 2017-18 school year. Have a wonderful summer!
Together, we are the change!
Cheers,
