There are many luxuries that we have come to take for granted in Canada: grocery stores stocked with fresh foods, plentiful access to clean water, and the opportunity to be empowered with an education, to name just a few. These luxuries are not universal. But, while caught up in our own lives, we often cannot imagine living without them.
This is why the water shut-off in my building was so impactful, personally. It forced me to recognize my dependence on a luxury that millions of people around the world go without. In trying to empathize with the situation of those without access to clean, running water, I became more aware of how wasteful my water consumption was.
Now, with water restored, I find myself much more cautious in my water usage. I wash dishes in a fraction of the water, shower in a fraction of the time, and have a renewed appreciation for the water that flows from our taps. Millions of people around the world lack access to water, let alone clean water. It is important to recognize our privilege and do what we can to help others.
Reducing my water usage was an easy way to lessen my negative environmental impact, but not all actions are quite as straightforward. It takes passion, dedication, and perseverance to take action on an issue you are passionate about. However, in doing so, know that your actions, whether big or small, and helping to build a better world. And that's something you can be proud of.
