When it came time to decide which major cause we at WE: FTC UofT would prioritize for the year, a lot of different avenues were discussed. In the end, it came down to two causes: Education and Opportunity, and those two became our main goals of the year.
At its core, our cause begins with education, and the desire to teach and inspire young individuals to invest in the world, and the people around them. Free the Children began with a small goal: to help people, and we believe that by prioritizing education, we can increase the possibility of opportunity. Opportunity, in simple terms, is a chance to do something, to achieve something greater, better, than what you have now.
In a world of increasing fear, opportunity is a will to see a better, safer and more peaceful future. So when we educate, we present the hope for more opportunities, where children have greater access to water, school, food, and mental health services. Where mothers have the access to uplift themselves and those around them. Where marginalized folks have the opportunity to create systems that benefit them and other marginalized communities.
At WE: FTC, we want to contribute to a dialogue that inspires change, self-confidence, and the desire to produce valuable change in our own communities. We believe that in order to do this, we must understand the fundamental ways in which change is provoked, and that begins with Education.
With that being said, we are so incredibly excited for the upcoming year. We have amazing events planned ahead, and can’t wait to share it with you all. Follow our socials for updates, and keep checking to see when our next event is!
